How to Create and Leverage Vision and Mission for Law Firms

In today’s post-pandemic competitive environment, law firms need to learn how to create and leverage vision and mission for a competitive advantage.

While vision and mission are important, not everyone understands the role each element plays. As noted in its eBook, “How to Grow Your Plaintiff Law Firm and Make it More Profitable”, Vista Consulting identifies Vision and Mission as one of ten key areas of top performing law firms.

Defining Vision and Mission

“I like to think of the vision as the someday and the mission as the everyday,” noted Mary Ellen Murrah, Operations Consultant at Vista Consulting. “Vision is a point in the future, something we can all strive for down the road – so it’s great if your vision is lofty. Mission is those things that you do along the way that get you closer to the vision,” she added.

For contingency fee law firms headed on a trajectory of growth, creating a clear and simple vision is key to aligning the organization to move in the right direction. “It’s so important for a law firm to have a defined vision, simply so that everybody in the firm can be rowing in the same direction,” underscored Mary Ellen.

For vision and mission to be effective, it requires the following:

  • Owners and leadership are involved and live it out
  • Employees participate in the creation/feedback process
  • Vision/Mission is authentic, visible and communicated
  • Vision/Mission becomes part of the DNA and culture
  • The firm recognizes and rewards Vision/Mission behavior

By uniting and motivating the law firm, vision and mission help provide a positive impact on employee performance that also extends to customer service.
